Claim-Evidence-Reasoning: Scientific Explanations to Increase Student Voice
Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) is a way for students to explain observed phenomenon in a scientific way. This structured approach allows students to use observations and data from an investigation. Students use critical reasoning to connect the claim and evidence together. CER is an acclaimed and highly successful instructional strategy that is changing how students understand concepts and write explanations for phenomena.

What Floats in a Moat? Using Children’s Intuitive Theories to Drive Water-Based Inquiry
This session begins by looking at young children’s background knowledge around mass, volume, density, and buoyancy. Then, participants will explore ways to extend knowledge using hands-on activities and children's literature. The typical sink-or-float science experiment is reframed into four inquiry-based activities that support wonder and build knowledge. Participants will also use their own knowledge of density and buoyancy to create rafts as part of a cross-curricular (literacy/science/engineering) extension.

A Meaningful Mess: Designing Experiences for Today’s Learners
Learning is messy, but it's our job to make it meaningful. Now more than ever, it’s important that educators see obstacles as opportunities. In order to thrive, we must look beyond our current circumstances to find innovative solutions as we continue to learn and grow within the new landscape of education. I will share practical ways to inspire, provide opportunities to learn, and encourage meaningful connections beyond the walls of the classroom, even when it's messy.

Unconscious biases and the ramifications that they can have in successful outcomes for students is an issue that requires attention and further understanding by all educators, particularly those who teach science and STEM courses. In this session, we will explore messages that are unknowingly downloaded into our unconscious thinking resulting in unconscious bias. We will also explore ways to identify unconscious biases in classroom decision making and strategies to mitigate them.

Pre-Coding: Computational Thinking in the Early Childhood Classroom
In the same way there are prereading and prewriting skills, there are foundational skills that help students develop coding abilities before they program a robot or even code on a screen. We will go through a series of short computational thinking activities in which students as young as pre-kindergarten age develop a truer sense of what coding is about, broadening their perspective as they become not only technology users but also technology innovators.

Ways to Move Students From What to How and Why
Imagine a world where the Albert Einsteins, Steven Hawkings, and Charles Darwins were not in the habit of asking questions and looking for answers. At the heart of every scientific investigation is inquiry, which starts with a question. How do we teach students to ask questions? How can we help students to organize the phenomena in nature and help move them from what to how and why?

Engaging Whole Communities in Science and Science Education: A Field to Classroom Experience With Latinx Communities
We design curriculum aligned that uses marine science examples to teach core concepts of biology, chemistry, or physics. Integrating the NGSS standards, our curriculum provides authentic science learning experiences with high levels of inquiry. Featuring Colombian marine scientists and their research our curriculum aims to increase science identity among Latinx students and other minorities. Our curriculum is available in Spanish and English for schools looking to promote more diversity in science.

What if We Ask the Students? Creating and Implementing a Metacognitive Data Tracker
Data meetings are as much of a reality to K–12 teachers and students as the high-stakes testing. Many leaders and scholars believe that testing keeps everyone accountable for content mastery and effectiveness of instruction. A data tool to help teachers in understanding students' struggles will be shared. Our findings are serving students and teachers to improve instruction from the start.

What’s Your Evidence? Making Sense of the Data Using a Structured Writing Protocol: Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning
For many students writing is a difficult task. Moreover, explaining one's thinking is the most difficult cognitive task for someone to do. Informational text is the backbone of science instruction and is addressed year-round. Let's turn the conversation around and begin aggressively addressing the process standards using the Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning protocol to assist our students and allow them to truly show what they know.

Computational Thinking in Physics and Astronomy Classes
How can computational thinking (CT) support learning in physics and astronomy classes? CT is more than coding but also data science, modeling, and systems thinking. There are connections between CT pedagogy and science pedagogy where the two can leverage the strengths of one another (e.g., worked examples). CT can bolster science learning using real-world data and authentic models. See several CT activities used in teaching physics and astronomy during the pandemic year.

AR U Ready: Augmented Reality in the Science Classroom
This session provides strategies resources and tools to help bring augmented reality experiences into the science classroom. We have several suggestions for free and low-cost activity ideas to provide immersive experiences in grades 5–12 science classrooms. Augmented reality merges computer-generated graphics or video on top of the real world we see before us. Adding these experiences increases engagement and excitement for the content.

Differentiation Made Easy
All students in your classroom deserve to be challenged—even in science—but sometimes the idea of differentiation can be overwhelming. If you are a self-contained teacher, differentiation can seem overwhelming to do in all subjects. In this session, you will learn how to easily differentiate in your science class and will be given time to start implementing strategies learned into your curriculum!

From 23andMe to Three-Parent Babies: The Revolution in Human Biology
New techniques have dramatically altered the landscape of human biology. These include the CRISPR gene-editing technique and mitochondrial transfer. Examples will include the use of gene drives to eliminate insect populations, gene editing of crop plants, and the use of genetic databases for ancestry determination and criminal identification. Also reviewed will be some of the ethical and moral concerns voiced by medical professionals and science ethicists about these techniques and their consequences.

Remote Learning Experience: Obstacle and Opportunity
The remote learning experience provided many obstacles. However, there were also many opportunities for us to realize what needs to be in place for real learning to happen. In this session, we will reflect and explore opportunities that became evident because of the experience and how we can maximize impact.

Let’s Get Green! Time to Trade in Your Screen Time for Some GREEN Time, and Here’s How!
Time to ditch your screens and take some "green breaks" (Morgan, 2020). Do you need a break from the latest teaching technology tools, gadgets, and devices? Do you want to renew, refocus, and recharge your natural sense of teaching and learning through outdoor investigation? This session promises to provide some much needed green, rather than screen, strategies that will get you and your students out of stuffy classrooms and into the natural world of inquiry.

Seeing in the Dark: Preserving Dark Skies
A dark night sky is a fast-diminishing natural resource that is often overlooked when we talk about conservation efforts. Light pollution is a growing problem, but it is one that is easily addressed with simple changes to outdoor lighting. This session will explore the value of darkness at night--to astronomers, communities, and nature. Participants will learn simple demonstrations and activities to promote dark sky preservation in their classrooms and communities.

TEACH Struggling Students How to LEARN
For every teacher action there is an equal and opposite student reaction. A cause-and-effect relationship begins between teacher and student where both are needed to complete the TEACH and LEARN process. By building on prior knowledge, students will not get lost with new content. By breaking down key points, students will not get frustrated. By highlighting key words and adding visuals, students will not lose interest. By providing proper support, all can succeed.
