Chemistry is Dicey
You will leave this session with classroom-proven activities to help students learn and reinforce atomic structure, ions, isotopes, calculation of atomic mass, writing and naming compounds and radioactive decay series. These activities use the random nature of dice to provide a fun, unpredictable, easily differentiated informal assessment of skills mastery. The teacher will know what his or her students know and be able to diagnose and rectify thought-process fallacies within the safety of non-binding expectations.

A Series of Fortunate Events
Why is the world the way it is? Does everything happen for a reason, or are some things left to chance? Philosophers and theologians have pondered these questions for millennia, but startling scientific discoveries over the past half century are revealing that we live in a world driven by chance. Sean B. Carroll will share the story of the awesome power of chance and how it is the surprising source.

All Students’ Ideas Matter
Students of all ages, abilities and backgrounds bring preconceived ideas to their learning. One of the most important and effective things K-12 science teachers can do is to uncover these ideas, understand where they come from and use them to build a bridge between students' misconceptions and a conceptual understanding of science. Explore commonly held ideas students are likely to bring to your classroom and how to use them to inform teaching and promote learning.

Teaching Science in an Online Environment
In an environment where students may be distance-learning, learning science without "doing" can be difficult to do and to understand. Science should be taught using multimodal opportunities and hands-on opportunities but also allow students to understand the why. Participants will engage in online/hands-on learning activities to help students "do" science in an online environment while allowing students to show their understanding of concepts using higher-level thinking.

Thinking Like a Lawyer: The Equity Case for Social Justice in Science Education
Culturally responsive teaching. Anti-racist education. These important ideas and mindsets frame crucial equity conversations in education today. But when it comes to actual instructional strategies in the science classroom, these concepts often lack a concrete connection. Leveraging issues of justice and fairness as a seamless component of high-quality science instruction recognizes that it is impossible to separate these prerequisites for equity from effective instruction explicitly tied to ambitious learning outcomes for all students.

Vivid Earth Science: Video Resources for Earth Science Teachers
Earth science is a difficult subject to teach. It requires system-thinking, spatial thinking, intradisciplinary background and the understanding of geologic processes in deep time and board scales. Visual materials, therefore, are useful tools to help students understand geological concepts and processes. We will share scientifically accurate video resources developed by UTD geoscientists and aligned to middle-school TEKS. We will further discuss the development strategy and effectiveness of our videos for motivational and cognition purposes.

Life in a Bottle -- Don’t Open That…It Stinks
Our ninth grade biology team shares how we use a closed bottle system to engage students in learning how the survival of organisms is dependent on recycling of energy and matter. We share how our students research, plan, build and observe a closed-bottle system that includes fish, shrimp, water from ponds and horse troughs, aquatic plants, sludge and more based on student-choice and how to support students as their bottles change over time.

Shadow Play: Exploring Patterns in the Earth/Sun System
Some of the most basic patterns that we encounter every day are caused by the sun's apparent motion across the sky. In this session, we will be discussing our shadows and how they change during the day. A few simple activities will be shared to give students in grades Pre-K to five a model for the Earth/Sun system, showing how the earth rotates, causing the sun to appear to rise and set every day.

STEM Integration: It’s Not About the Product, It’s About the Process
The intent of STEM education is to create classroom experiences that mirror what happens in our current workforce. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics were never meant to be presented in isolation. By integrating STEM, students gain understanding of topics as they figure out why something is happening or create a solution to a problem such as the current pandemic. The focus of learning shifts from the end product to the actual process of learning.

Funny You Should Think That About Light and Shadows
Elementary school is the foundation for most science concepts. Many times misconceptions are inadvertently created when teachers use common vocabulary when trying to explain or teach a difficult concept without being sure the students have the foundation for the concept. This talk will address common misconceptions that occur when teaching light and shadows at the elementary level, how teachers can help prevent the formation of these misconceptions and ideas on how to strengthen students' foundation.

Painting with Poo Germs
Our ninth grade biology team shares how we use petri dishes, antibiotic disks and bacteria samples to engage students in learning more about diversity, adaptation and natural selection all under the guise of an art project. By collaborating with the school’s art team, students are now able to learn these concepts much earlier in the academic year in a more engaging and concrete manner by sketching with bacteria and observing their art change over time.

Pandemics Triggered by Climate Change
Pandemics have (literally) plagued humans throughout history. Before there was airplane travel, it usually took a major environmental disruption to create the necessary conditions to allow for a global spread, and that disruption was often provided by a rapid change in climate. We will examine the environmental factors that helped trigger pandemics such as the 1918 Spanish Flu, the 1820 Cholera outbreak and the 14th-century bubonic plague.

Science at the Center: A Preschool Science Framework
Children are natural scientists. Science is limited in elementary schools, but it can still be found in preschool classrooms. Despite children’s innate curiosity, many preschools isolate science. In this session, we present the “Preschool Science Framework” to provide new opportunities to bring science out of the science center. Using this framework, science can be explored through dramatic play, sensory play, community and curiosity and can help children develop a personal connection to the natural world.
