Official NDiSTEM Artwork

For #2024NDISTEM, SACNAS is proud to have partnered with artist Lucinda "La Morena" Hinojos, an internationally renowned muralist and painter, and the first Chicana, Native American artist to be chosen as the marquee artist for the Super Bowl. La Morena designed a deeply meaningful piece that will be featured at #2024NDISTEM in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Design | La Morena

"The design is a celebration of innovation, reflecting the dynamic nature of indigenous culture. It honors the past while embracing the future, weaving together tradition, modernity and science in a vibrant tapestry of identity and resilience."

The art piece itself features multiple symbols that represent key parts of the culture and history in Arizona. The maiz (corn) serves as a representation of Native American & Indigenous innovation and economic fortitude, rooted into the Earth and our past while growing towards the sky in pursuit of the future- with STEM elements representing a new narrative for our community. The Pascua Yaqui deer dancer is shown in the traditional dance which pays homage to the Earth and promises to take care of the land gifted to us. The O’odham basket dancer is also a shown in a traditional dance which pays homage to the Earth, in gratitude for all we have been given. Both tribes are local to Arizona, and our artist identifies as Pascua Yaqui herself.  The hummingbirds are La Morena’s signature component, and represent resilience and courage, empowering our community to pursue their futures courageously.
