Admiral Hyman Rickover is known as the “father of the nuclear navy.” In the early 50’s, he was asked to build his nuclear fleet - but he was cautioned “make it safe as Americans have no tolerance for tragedy.” Over a period of years, he put together seven control measures (the rules of Admiral Rickover) to address problems lying in wait with the goal of preventing a nuclear tragedy. These rules are continuous improvement, quality people, solid supervision, respecting risk, constant and rigorous training, solid auditing and continuous learning.
