StrengthsFinder™ Workshop (Morning)
8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Research demonstrates that people succeed when they focus on what they do best. When they identify their talents and develop them into strengths, people are more productive, they perform better, and they are more engaged. As busy CS professionals, sometimes we need a pause button -- a day to reflect, check in and re-group. We need to ask: What’s working? What isn’t? How am I showing up in my life and in my work? Am I living from my strengths or are my fears and self-doubts running the show? This workshop will provide space for questions such as these, as well as answers, through a day of learning about your strengths, connecting, self-care, and concrete tools to rejuvenate, inspire and empower. |

Implementing a Certification-based Sterile Processing Career Ladder at a Regional, Multi-site Health System
7:00 AM - 8:00 AM
Certification, while currently required by only a few states, is an important step toward achieving and maintaining a high-performing Central Service department. Well-intentioned efforts to implement a shared, certification-based career ladder across a multi-hospital health system can encounter organizational barriers (political, economic and human resource) that might deter or derail development and successful deployment. This session will explore one regional Midwestern health system’s struggles and triumphs as leaders challenged the status quo and raised the bar for competence, quality and employee recognition. |

Steam Quality and Steam and Water Purity: The Missing Links in Successful Processing
7:00 AM - 8:00 AM
Many facilities never test their steam and do nothing to condition the water for use in SPD. What could possibly go wrong? Providing clean and sterile instruments for patient use requires the use of appropriate procedures, process chemistry and process equipment. Water is a chemical and it is the one used most in processing of reusable medical devices. When things go wrong (staining, wet loads, failed indicators), it affects patient safety and the institution's bottom line. This session will discuss water and steam testing, and how it can provide information and data at a relatively low cost and lead directly to straightforward ways of ensuring that staining and wet loads are a thing of the past. |

Unique Device Identifier (UDI) Panel Discussion
7:00 AM - 8:00 AM
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finalized the Unique Device Identifier (UDI) Rule in 2013. The regulation requires manufacturers (labelers) to place a UDI on each medical device package through its distribution and use in the US. The ultimate goal of implementing the UDI system is to improve efficiencies, reduce costs and, most importantly, improve patient safety. Panel members from across the UDI continuum (regulatory, manufacturing, supply chain/sterile processing) will define UDI; review important implementation dates that impact healthcare organizations; address key areas of UDI adoption into existing supply chain and clinical operations; and introduce specific topics, such as challenges and opportunities of UDI integration in supply chain and materials management systems, costs of UDI adoption, tracking non-sterile implants, and more. |

Leveraging Scientific Evidence to Improve the Quality of Endoscope Reprocessing
8:15 AM - 9:15 AM
The evidence is clear - reprocessing flexible endoscopes is difficult and new breaches and outbreaks continue to be discovered. These issues adversely impact both employees and patients, and new approaches to quality management will be necessary to improve outcomes. The presenters will explain findings from a 2018 survey of IAHCSMM members about endoscope reprocessing practices, training programs and workplace environments. They will also describe the findings from a multi-site study of bronchoscope reprocessing effectiveness that found issues similar to what has been reported with gastrointestinal endoscopes. Insights from that study and a 2018 evaluation of costs and resources involved in bronchoscopy will be used to highlight strategies for making evidence-based decisions about quality management and risk reduction. |

How to Pour a Proper Guinness - Everything has an IFU!
9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
Instructions for use (IFU) give Sterile Processing professionals the information needed to clean, assemble and terminally process a medical device in compliance with the validated measures prescribed by the device manufacturer. If the IFU is not properly followed, the device likely will not be safe for use on the next patient. The same with pouring a glass of Guinness: if not properly done, it will not be drinkable. Data from a survey of Sterile Processing professionals will be presented that will provide insight into the current state of IFU compliance. At the end of the presentation, the role that IFU play in “staying out of the headlines” and delivering safe, ready-to-use devices for proper patient care will be the touch point for further reflection and discussion. |

Biofilm Housing Development: Work Surfaces, Devices, Cleaning Equipment
10:45 AM - 11:45 AM
Biofilm communities dwell within a protective structure that enables them to thrive in many environments. Anywhere there is water or moisture, along with a tiny amount of organic debris of any sort, there is enough for the construction of biofilm. Very recently, it was discovered that after biofilm is in place, it survives very well on dry surfaces throughout the hospital – for years! Biofilm releases free bacteria to start new colonies and try to infect vulnerable individuals. Preventing its formation and actively removing it from wet and dry surfaces is essential to patient safety This course will discuss biofilm formation, why it is so hard to eradicate, and how to prevent it. |

Surface Changes of Medical Devices: Prevention of Deposits, Discoloration and Corrosion
7:00 AM - 8:00 AM
In the field, many medical products are subject to surface changes over time due to chemical, thermal and/or physical impacts. The origin of such changes can usually be found in the reprocessing conditions, which can shorten the life-cycle of those medical products and result in hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars in extra expenses per year. Fifty-plus years of reprocessing experience will be shared with participants, which will not only reflect the US best practices, standards and guidelines of organizations such as AAMI, but also take into consideration the common best practices and key learnings from Europe and other well-developed industrial countries around the world. |

Surgical Instruments or Equipment Contamination: Incident Investigation and Material Identification
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM
Healthcare continues to be challenged with hospital-acquired infections and the associated patient harm and financial loss. At the onset of these outbreaks, healthcare risk management and administration must be familiar with the immediate steps necessary to investigate the source of contamination and prevent recurrence. Investigations of patient contamination and infection can be very costly, time consuming and non-conclusive if not performed effectively. This presentation will outline investigation methodologies to rule out many potential contributing factors in contamination cases related to endoscopes, surgical instruments and devices, and hospital facilities, as well as discuss the likely need to use third-party experts in material and chemical analysis during investigations. |

Sterilization of Flexible Endoscopes
2:45 PM - 3:45 PM
Based on their application, flexible endoscopes are considered semi-critical medical devices that require sterilization, if feasible, or high-level disinfection (HLD) if sterilization is impractical. Sterilization, in general, provides a greater margin of safety than HLD; therefore, it is expected that by shifting all HLD processes to sterilization, the risk of infection through flexible endoscopy will drop considerably. In this presentation, we will discuss how high demands from healthcare facilities, as well as technological advancements in both endoscope materials and sterilization, could make low-temperature sterilization modalities practical for flexible endoscopes. |

Global SPD Trends: What You Can Do with the Data to Make a Difference
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Did You Know: More than 57% of instruments in surgical sets are not fit for use in the OR? Did You Know: Facilities have a minimum of 16% surplus of instruments in their trays and utilization rates can be as low as 13%? Do you know how your facility compares to these global statistics? These staggering facts are driving a global trend of inefficiency. With healthcare costs skyrocketing, the need for efficiencies within the Sterile Processing department are greater than ever. You cannot afford to not be in the know. This presentation will share global trends that have been observed and documented by Aesculap Consulting Services in Sterile Processing departments around the world.
