Washer Disinfectors: What’s going on behind the glass?
Washer disinfectors are a critical part of medical device processing. The goal of this presentation is to familiarize you with the steps in a washer/disinfector cycle and how each one works toward that goal.
The presentation includes:
• types of washer/disinfector cycles and washers,
• the function of the phases of a washer/disinfector cycle,
• consumables and utilities used in each phase,
• optimal conditions for each phase and what happens when they are not met,
• how to condense different phases and still have successful cleaning results, and
• what incomplete cleaning results tell you about your cycle and how to respond.

Equipment Planning Doesn't Stop after Construction
Construction and renovation start with a detailed capacity and workflow analysis to develop an equipment plan to meet the department's current and future needs. Just like predicting the weather, the farther into the future we look, the less accurate the prediction becomes. Changes in worker demographics, supported procedures, and medical device technological advancements alters the department's equipment needs. Added challenges from aging equipment and equipment obsolescence makes it clear that the equipment plan once relevant becomes outdated and useless. This program will discuss how equipment planning should be adapted to meet these challenges and provide sterile processing leadership the support needed to justify new technologies to keep their department running smoothly.

Everyone’s dirty little secret
Technicians know certain lumened instruments cannot be cleaned, yet we go through the motions of brushing and flushing per manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU) and hope it’s good enough. Borescopes recently entered the scene as a disruptive technology that enables something never possible before—seeing what’s inside. In this session, three experts describe the Lumens 2.0 study they conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of cleaning IFU for orthopedic and neurosurgery instruments. They’ll share case studies that are even more horrific than expected. You’ll learn how to shed light on your safety concerns by using borescopes and swabs to evaluate IFU.

Impact of Pre–Treatment and Restoration (Stain Removal and Descaling) Process Steps On Life Cycle of Surgical Instruments and SPD Efficiency
This workshop, presented by Dr. Weigert, addresses how water quality (per ANSI/AAMI ST108 recommendations), processing start times, and the use of pre-treatment detergents can affect the life cycle of surgical instruments and the efficiency of an SPD. An interactive hands–on demonstration at several workstations will demonstrate how the use of a pre-treatment detergent in the Operating Room (OR) impacts the cleaning process in the SPD. Participants will also understand how the appearance of surgical instruments can be restored. Speaker(s): Anas Aljabo Matthias TschoernerLocation: |

Instrument Tray Quality - Because Every Patient Deserves It
If you or a loved one needed surgery at your facility, how confident are you that any instrument set pulled off the shelf would be good enough? Many of us know which trays and which technicians we would be comfortable with, and which one's we would not. Disparities in set quality are indicative of process challenges that ultimately lead to risk for patients. This workshop will focus on tools and tips on how to implement a proactive instrument set quality assurance program that can lead more consistency in instrument safety and performance - because every patient is someone's loved one.

Leading Lights: Infection Prevention’s Role in IFU Compliance
To provide safe passage into a harbor, lighthouses are equipped with two leading lights, one at the top and the other at the bottom. When these leading lights align, ships can rest assured that the pathway is safe. This dynamic mirrors the relationship between Sterile Processing and Infection Preventionists in ensuring compliance with Manufacturer’s Instructions for Use (IFU). Infection Control plays an important role in preempting non-compliant IFUs, auditing adherence, and assessing the risks when IFU’s conflict. With new Joint Commission standards highlighting IFU compliance, alignment between IPs and SPD leaders is vital to ensure patient safety is never compromised.

Power of the Preceptor: Bridging the Gap between Education and Execution
Under the direction of Whitney Huddleston, the Sterile Processing Educators at The University of Kansas Health System identified four common obstacles associated with onboarding staff and educational retention. These include focusing on standardizing training processes, developing targeted resources for preceptors, streamlining educational objectives, and increasing competency for staff. Our presentation focuses on developing a Sterile Processing targeted preceptor course, partnering with Ziel to address critical conversations, understanding adult learning styles and its impact on learning, and assessing standardization of education on culture. Identifying and addressing these areas became instrumental in allowing us to bridge the “Gap between Education and Execution”.

QA Foundations: Building Blocks for Reprocessing Excellence
ANSI/AAMI provides guidance on quality assurance monitoring in medical device reprocessing. This presentation will take a deep dive into what the standards describes as a quality management system (QMS) and how to get started in your department. Covering topics from equipment testing to cleaning verification, this discussion will review various elements of quality management , who is responsible and how to get started or improve what’s already in place. Using interactive resources we will identify proactive and reactive quality measures and their role in medical device reprocessing. By the end participants will take home an outline containing requirement references, a space for stakeholders and working group recommendations and other next steps to design a compliant and comprehensive quality management system.

Reprocessing Outside of Sterile Processing: Lessons Learned from Opening Ambulatory Locations
Establishing highly reliable processes for reprocessing outside of Sterile Processing Departments (SPD) can be challenging due to a variety of factors. Descriptions of Infection Preventionists (IPs) and their role in reprocessing are presented, including comparing the roles of IPs and SPD and the different guidelines available during design. IP’s expectations for new reprocessing spaces lead into two different scenarios of designing, constructing, and opening ambulatory locations. Lessons learned from opening conclude the session, highlighting key areas of opportunity and pitfalls to avoid when creating new reprocessing space outside SPD.

Solving the $PD Quality and Production Challenge: An Update
If your $PD is not meeting your Production and Quality Goals and/or if you struggle to get capital resources for your department, this session is for you. $PD is a production area. We will review our study done in cooperation with the University of Michigan Industrial Engineering Department that highlights the cost of $PD related errors. We will cover the three primary goals of every $PD, the four variables that impact your ability to achieve these goals, why hospital incident reporting systems are grossly inadequate for $PD quality management and how to apply Lean Six Sigma methodology to improve $PD production and quality. Using real examples of what works and what does not work, you will be prepared to implement actionable plans to improve your $PD performance and quality.

Water and Steam Technology in the SPD
Steam, water, and compressed air are piped in to sterile processing departments. Treatment technology can help or hinder SPD. Because sterile processing needs higher steam pressure, higher air pressure, cleaner water, steam system drainage and pressure regulation are critical Understanding why and where this technology is used will help the manager and technician communicate with facilities engineers and managers.

You Down with PPE?
It is crucial to wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when in Sterile Processing and to don and doff it correctly. Cross contamination and risks to staff safety can occur if the facility defined process is not followed. This session will outline the importance of PPE as well as the “WHY” behind the requirements of wearing PPE. Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on demonstration of the doffing process that will show how easy it can be to contaminate yourself during these steps through the use of a bioluminescent product.
