For every paid full conference registration for InfoCon 2024, ARMA will donate $5.00 to Books Between Kids, a non-profit organization serving Houston’s at-risk children by providing them with books to build their own home libraries.

About Books Between Kids

Since their foundation in 2012, Books Between Kids' mission has been to get books into the hands of children who may not have access to them in Houston. Throughout the year, they collect new and gently-used books, sort them, and prepare them for distribution to children in the Houston community. Currently 85%, or 90,000, of Houston Independent School District elementary-aged children live at or below the poverty line, so the need is certainly there.

In their 10th year of operations, Books Between Kids has grown from a small organization that impacts a few hundred children to one that has distributed more than 2.3 million books to over 500,000 children in 44 zip codes throughout Greater Houston

The Impact

A recent study shows that while in middle income neighborhoods the ratio of books per child is 13 to 1, in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children.  Studies also show these children often have reading test scores well below average. One such study reported that only 16% of children in low-income families score in the upper range for reading test scores, while 50% of children from the most affluent families score in the upper range. In The Literary Crisis:  False Claims, Real Solutions (1998), it was reported that the biggest predictor of academic success is not race, income, gender, parents’ education or location; it is the presence of books in the home.
