GENERAL SESSION: Innovation Challenge
Innovation is something we strive to incorporate into everything we do in the Transit Technology world. Whether you represent a transit agency, a technology provider or are a consultant, we are all problem solvers, focused on how we can more equitably advance fare collection technology used by millions of riders every day. On day 3 of the conference we are going to launch APTA Tech’s Innovation Challenge. This is a fun, interactive opportunity to join your colleagues in teams of 8 to creatively brainstorm solutions for some of our industry’s toughest challenges. As this is our first year we are starting small so we won’t be pulling all-nighters just yet but the winners of the challenge will get bragging rights and a case of JOLT Cola to power them through next year’s challenge.

Transit Systems Integration Guidelines
Systems Lifecycle Engineering, Why It Matters: Systems fail at technical interfaces. Projects fail at programmatic or organizational interfaces. Often, the acquiring agency becomes the unintended (DeFacto) systems integrator when the various suppliers are finished. The agency has to make it all work together in the end! This session shows you how to intentionally execute systems integration (and when / how to deploy an independent integration expert). In many cases, there are intellectual property concerns from a “black box supplier” which must be addressed. This especially true when software-centric products are acquired. How does the black box interface with agency systems? The presentation will provide real-world lessons learned and a practical, process-based systematic approach for Interface Management and Systems Integration. Applied Research in Support of Public Transportation
“Research” is sometimes perceived within the transit industry as focusing on topics that are too methodological or scientific in nature, and not pertinent to the immediate concerns facing transit agencies. And yet, several applied research programs exist that are applied in nature and support innovation in the public transportation industry, including the University Transportation Centers, the Federal Transit Administration’s Research and Innovation, and others. This session will highlight some recent applied research that supports technology development and deployment in public transportation, and discuss some of the challenges.

Special Fare Programs: Bringing Ridership Back
In this session, we will discuss with two agencies what recent programs they have implemented to entice riders back, how they used technology to make these programs work for both riders and the agency, and what were some of the challenges they faced in the rollout. We will hear from SEPTA about how they created a special program called Key Advantage Partners in a six month pilot that started in 2022 that is now converting into an ongoing program being rolled out city wide. And we will hear how King County Metro launched the first digital transit ticketing program for a professional sports franchise in North America wherein riders can now plan their trip, show their event ticket, and buy merchandise in a single app and can even get a free public transit ticket to the game, which was the impetus for their innovative Transit GO Rewards program. Safety and Security in Rail Industry
The rail industry has always placed a high emphasis on safety and security, and technology has played an increasingly important role in ensuring both. With millions of passengers and tons of freight being transported every day, safety is critical to prevent accidents and protect human lives. Technology such as signaling systems, onboard sensors, wireless crossings, and predictive maintenance software help detect and prevent potential issues before they can cause harm. Security is also a top priority, as rail networks are potential targets for terrorist attacks or sabotage. Advanced security systems, including surveillance cameras, access control measures, and cybersecurity protocols, help safeguard the rail infrastructure and prevent unauthorized access or malicious attacks. Ultimately, the investment in safety and security technology in the rail industry not only protects passengers, employees, and cargo but also promotes confidence in the industry and helps ensure its continued growth and success.

Use Technology to Manage Safety and Security Challenges in Rail Industry
The rail industry faces numerous safety and security challenges, such as collisions, derailments, vandalism, and theft. The use of technology has proven to be a valuable tool in addressing these risks. For instance, advanced sensors can be installed to monitor the tracks and detect any anomalies that could potentially cause an accident. Similarly, video surveillance cameras can be installed at strategic locations to deter criminal activity and provide evidence in case of a security breach. Additionally, the use of biometric authentication systems can enhance the security of access points, preventing unauthorized personnel from accessing restricted areas. With the development of technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, the rail industry can leverage these tools to analyze data and predict potential safety or security issues, allowing them to take proactive measures to prevent accidents or mitigate the impact of incidents. By embracing technology, the rail industry can significantly enhance its safety and security measures and protect its passengers, employees, and assets.

Keynote Presentation: Public Transportation Matters…the FUTURE IS NOW!
Public transportation is essential to people and communities! At the same time, the future of our sector promises to be a dynamic and evolving landscape – shifting travel and commutation patterns, important demographic changes – public expectations, preferences, behavior, and unrest; increasing climatic impacts, economic instability, and a host of geopolitical considerations – just to name a few. Amidst these momentous changes – how “WE” – “public transportation professionals and organizations” message and demonstrate our “value” proposition. And rise to the challenge of working “WITH” people, communities, and other important stakeholders and constituencies -- will be a major determinant of our future. In this transformative period – including rapid technological change, public transportation as we have known it – is grappling with complicated questions, major changes and shifts that have significant implications for people, communities, and society. Most of which have not been caused by transit. But are so integral to our daily lives that we are being challenged to “fundamentally rethink some of our basic beliefs about how we best serve our customers and communities.” In this keynote address, we pinpoint some of the important shifts taking place.Take a look at some of the new and emerging technologies. Share a few inspiring stories and examples about how to effectively lead, adapt, and forge new paths. And, provide some thoughts and suggestions – both “personal” and “organizational” on how to reset, lead, transform, and grow (“add value”) in this period of disruption, change, and transformation.
