Moving the Needle on Access and University Mobility
The passage of the ADA more than 30 years ago envisioned a time when mainline transit would be accessible and barrier free. In this world, everyone, regardless of ability, could catch the bus, the subway or the train and would no longer need to rely on “special services” like paratransit. Three decades later, we’ve built much of that world, yet we still seem focused on paratransit.
How did this happen, and how can we get the world to notice the accessible mainline services all around them? During this audience-interactive session, our panelists will talk about their own experiences promoting the idea of a single, interconnected network of accessible transit, where mainline accessibility is highlighted, and passengers take advantage of all services offered. Through audience facilitated conversation, the session will explore two simple questions: What have you done to successfully bring your passengers to accessible mainline services, and what lessons have you learned from your attempts to bring passengers to the full multi-modal, accessible system. Please join our discussion and come ready to share and learn! At the Intersection of Mindfulness & Innovation
Are you feeling overwhelmed by the constant pressure to innovate? Do you find yourself stuck in the same patterns of thinking, unable to break through to fresh ideas? Join us for a transformative session that explores the surprising connection between mindfulness and innovation. Discover how cultivating present-moment awareness can unlock your creative potential, leading to breakthrough insights and sustainable solutions.
Wakeful relaxation is a creativity essential. Creativity and innovation are much needed to respond to our organizational and environmental challenges. In this session we’ll explore the connection between meditation and creativity. Drawing on the experience and insights of both non-meditators and experienced meditators, we’ll explore meditation and investigate how it helps us let go of the fixed and rigid thinking that so often gets in the way of creativity and innovation. The session will include meditation instruction, guided meditation, and small group discussions. Closing Session: Accessible Transit – Thirty-four Years After the American’s with Disabilities Act
Since its enactment in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act has increased access and opportunity for persons with disabilities across community life. ADA Paratransit was created as a “safety net” for people with disabilities who couldn’t use fixed-route due to disability. This was at a time when fixed-route service was far less accessible than it is today. Even with the huge progress in the accessibility of bus and rail systems, not everyone with a disability can use ADA accessible fixed-route services. Compared with 34 years ago, persons with disabilities have far higher expectations of themselves, and society views disability far more inclusively today than in 1990. Panelists will take a fresh look at accessible transit in the context of mature fixed-route systems and a more modern view of accessibility.

Is DEI Essentially Dead? No! Here’s Why
With many states enacting anti-diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) laws, and the Supreme Court’s recent decision on affirmative action admissions policies in higher education having indirect consequences for DEI efforts, what does this mean for transit agencies and businesses who value DEI? How can you advance DEI in your organization with as little risk as possible? This session is designed to share strategies and tactics for advancing DEI in uncertain times and in a manner that does not run afoul of State laws and Constitutional rulings.
