Beyond Ridership: Metrics for Measuring Transit’s Value
The pandemic has shown communities across North America that transit is essential to keeping our economy moving and providing vital access each day to jobs, healthcare, education, and other basic needs. Traditionally, however, transit’s success has been quantified by how many passengers we carry rather than the true economic, social, and environmental benefits we provide to the broader community, both for those that use transit and those who do not. Join this compelling discussion on rethinking how transit’s value is measured and communicated to customers, the general public, and business and political leaders. What new metrics and practical tools are available and how are they being applied to tell a more comprehensive story?

Transit Agency Approaches to Supporting People Who are Homeless
Public transportation systems have realized an increase in those experiencing homelessness consuming transportation services and facilities as shelter. Transit agencies play a role in supporting persons who are homeless in their communities. Initiatives are a result of partnerships and a commitment to work with stakeholders to pursue solutions to address the economic, social and health factors. Many agencies have begun to enlist the assistance of contracted or in-house mental health clinicians or crisis interventionists and non-law enforcement resources. Join this workshop to contribute to a discussion on a topic that requires compassion, and community commitment.

Cutting-edge Transit Safety Technologies
This session will cover various cutting-edge technologies in the transit bus safety industry. This includes a Voice over IP product that, instead of radio, leverages wireless networks for communication during emergencies, protests, and safety issues taking place at transit properties nationwide. Bus collision avoidance is another technology that will be discussed, including a research project that took place at a mid-size transit agency with this technology being piloted. Finally, electric buses are becoming more and more common throughout the U.S. and Canada and this presentation will focus on the safety implications of this technology, including the installation of the infrastructure and the safety concerns for those who operate the equipment.

How to Think About Your Long-Term Transition to a Zero Emission Fleet
Transitioning most or all of your bus fleet to zero emission buses will require careful planning and coordination across agencies and with outside stakeholders. Transit agencies were already doing this, but the work will accelerate rapidly with new FTA LowNo Funding. In this session, you’ll hear from agencies and their partners on how they thought about the plans for their agency’s long-term transition, what are the fundamental principles guiding their decisions, and how have they have planned for and managed the transition with multiple technologies.

Green Mobility
Public transportation providers are further strengthening public transportation and other low/zero carbon modes as the green alternative as they implement sustainability practices connected to buildings, operations, fleets, water use, waste, and overall greenhouse reduction, often in collaboration with their municipal and regional partners. Adoption of such sustainability practices make transit organizations leaders and good corporate citizens in their communities. They also make good business sense. This discussion will identify ways transit agencies can cut costs and contribute to a healthy triple bottom line.

Fireside Chat on Equity in Fares and Beyond
Public transit and equity are inextricably linked. Public transportation exists primarily to equalize mobility, and transit fares should be fair, meaning everyone pays the right amount. Access should also be fair, meaning we have the ability to board, and we aren’t limited based on our payment method. And finally, all communities should have access to transit. In theory, public transit access is available to all, regardless of socioeconomic or physical differences. In practice, however, ensuring equitable access to public transit is a complex task.

Extending Transit’s Reach: Lessons from Mobility Hubs and Bike-Transit Integration
As cities continue to invest in in bicycle infrastructure and as transit agencies consider bike-share programs part of their portfolio, trends toward bike-transit integration are poised to continue. This is good news for public transportation agencies, since a symbiotic relationship exists between transit and cycling. People without cars often use both, and bicycles can provide valuable first-mile/last-mile connections to transit service.
Seamless integration between transit and biking can transform urban transportation networks. Urban mobility hubs, and bike-friendly communities represent desired outcomes. Our panel will discuss best ideas for convenient and customer-friendly connections that can attract new riders to both modes.
