Turning Tension Into Progress: Mastering Hard Conversations
This interactive fishbowl workshop invites participants to observe and engage in real-time conversations about navigating difficult workplace tensions. Through a structured dialogue format, a small group will model challenging conversations while others observe, gaining insight into the dynamics of tension and effective communication strategies. Participants will have the opportunity to rotate into the “inner circle” to practice techniques for identifying tension points, managing emotions, and steering conversations toward resolution. Guided by a trained facilitator, the group will collectively analyze the approaches used, discuss alternative strategies, and reflect on lessons learned. Simplify to Succeed: Building Customer Service Without the Silos
Associations often fall into the trap of over-customizing customer service, believing their organization is so unique that it requires complex, specialized processes. This mindset can unintentionally create silos and an overreliance on departmental “specialists.” Instead, focus on making it easy for customers to do business with you. This session explores how to streamline service delivery by implementing best practices, defining service tiers, maximizing institutional knowledge, and leveraging technology to create a more unified and effective customer experience.

LAB Session | Beyond the Agenda: How Design Thinking Transforms Events into Experiences
What makes an event truly unforgettable is how people feel, both during and after the experience. Explore how a human-centered approach can breathe new life into long-standing formats, elevate emotional engagement, and create moments that resonate well beyond the event. We’ll draw from a real-life case study where design thinking re-imagined a traditional closing session and awards ceremony (yes, both!). You’ll learn repeatable design thinking methods you can apply to any challenge, not just events. This collaborative approach brings together diverse perspectives and builds buy-in by giving everyone a voice in the solution. Through real examples and a hands-on activity, you’ll leave with practical tools to design experiences that are not only well-run, but truly meaningful. Whether you plan events, lead member engagement, design programs, or drive strategy, this session will help you center people, emotion, and purpose in the experiences you create.
*LAB (Learn, Apply, Build) Sessions are designed to foster hands-on skill building and require advance sign-up due to limited seating. From Risk to Real Change: The Courage to Lead with Equity
True inclusion isn’t built on statements — it’s built on systems, accountability, and the courage to face what’s uncomfortable. In this candid, story-driven session, Michelle Mills Clement shares what it really takes to push meaningful equity work forward inside an entrenched system: the risks, the backlash, the lessons, and the breakthroughs. This is not a checklist or feel-good statement session — it’s a call to do the messy, necessary work of aligning your association’s policies, leadership pipelines, programs, communications, and culture with the values you claim, both inside and out. Participants will break down real examples — from researching history to auditing events and education — and walk away with practical tools to build trust, engage stakeholders honestly, navigate pushback, and stay the course, especially in climates where equity work is under increased scrutiny.

Inside the Resistance: Leading Bold Ideas Through Bureaucracy
Every association leader has faced it: a bold idea that dies in committee, a pilot that stalls mid-launch, a board that says “not yet.” Innovation isn’t blocked by apathy—it’s blocked by internal resistance designed to protect the past. This session dives headfirst into the real-time challenges of driving change inside legacy structures. Through a dynamic, decision-based case study, Rashmi Airan takes participants through escalating dilemmas pulled from real association scenarios—introducing new models, rethinking programs, facing board fear, or staff fatigue. Along the way, participants vote on decisions that shape the story’s outcome, revealing the tradeoffs and tensions behind every move. You’ll leave with sharper instincts for navigating culture, power, and risk inside your association—and tools to move bold ideas forward without burning bridges.

Leading Through the Fog: How Association Executives Make Clarity a Daily Habit
Unclear goals. Too many priorities. Mixed signals from leadership. These issues are common in associations—and they quietly kill execution. This session helps leaders turn the abstract concept of “clarity” into a repeatable, daily practice. Participants will learn how to recognize when their message isn’t landing, reduce the noise that fuels decision fatigue, and build shared understanding across functions. Drawing from real-world examples, we’ll explore how small shifts in how you communicate can drive big improvements in alignment, accountability, and speed. Leaders navigating change, working across hybrid teams, or managing up and down the org chart will benefit from proven tools and frameworks to clarify expectations and direction. Whether you're addressing your board, your direct reports, or cross-functional peers, this session will give you the language and habits to be a clarity multiplier in your organization—especially when it matters most.

The Curious Case of the Conference Escape Room
For a conference to be successful, it needs to be an exciting, unique experience. Attendees want to walk away with memories, not just continuing education credits and further learning. The National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN) has made their volunteer-led escape room into the fundamental participant experience at their annual conference. Launched in 2023, the hands-on, fast-paced experience has now become a sought after sponsorship opportunity, a highly selling product, and something their attendees look forward to each year. This presentation describes the three-year journey from a simple, puzzle-based activity with a timer, into a fully built out room with baby dolls, costumes, and nurses demanding more experiences like it. An interactive component of this presentation will include brainstorming how to create a basic escape room that could apply to your association.

Decide Already: Leading Through Uncertainty with Confidence
In today’s volatile and complex world, waiting for clarity is a luxury few can afford. Leaders are expected to make high-stakes decisions under pressure, often with incomplete data, conflicting input, and a room full of nervous stakeholders. This session introduces the Decision Defibrillator Framework, a practical, field-tested tool designed to restart stalled decision-making in uncertain, high-stakes moments, to help leaders regain grip, restore clarity, and move forward in alignment. Drawing on real-world lessons from billion-dollar projects in extreme environments, Maartje van Krieken brings sharp insights, proven strategies, and a dose of dry humor to show how leaders can stop the swirl, get unstuck, and move forward with confidence, even when no one has “the answer.” Participants will walk away with a tactical system, a tool that reduces organizational chaos, increases decision velocity, and empowers teams to act decisively, without getting trapped in cycles of doubt, delay, or overanalysis.

Ready Leader One: Powering Up for the Next Level of Leadership
Leadership isn’t a final destination—it’s a multi-level quest. Just like in gaming, you start by mastering the basics, learning the rules, and gaining XP (experience) before you unlock the next stage of your journey. In this session, two accomplished association professionals will share how they leveled up from entry-level players to leadership contenders—thanks to mentorship, strategic decisions, and a clear understanding of the challenges each stage brings. Using real-life scenarios, practical power-ups (aka tactics), and insight into what it takes to prepare for the final boss (senior leadership), we’ll explore how individuals and organizations can create smarter, more intentional leadership pipelines. Participants will leave with a playbook for succession planning, insight into mentoring as a leadership development tool, and tips for equipping future leaders with the skills they need to reach the next level.

Rogue Committees: When Passion Derails Governance
Ever feel like your association’s committees are operating in their own universe—making rules, calling shots, and sidestepping the board? In the dynamic world of associations, passionate volunteers are the heartbeat of the mission. But sometimes a committee can unintentionally (or intentionally!) start acting like the real power broker. The result? A governance tangle that turns well-meaning volunteers into a rogue operation.
Join Edward McMurray, a seasoned association and nonprofit consultant and attorney, and Bailey McMurray, an association executive director with firsthand experience navigating organizational challenges, as they unpack this all-too-common governance dilemma. Through real stories, sharp insights, and a touch of humor, they’ll explore how to rein in committee overreach, restore alignment, and build systems that support—not sideline—your board’s authority. Speaker(s): Edward McMurray, MBA, JD, Principal, Association Governance Advisors Bailey McMurray, MAOL, IOM, Chief Executive Officer, American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care

Membership on Their Terms: Designing for the Next Generation
For today’s early-career professionals, joining an association isn’t a given. It’s a decision shaped by value, timing, and relevance. In this session, we’ll explore how associations can respond with purpose-built experiences that attract, engage, and retain the next generation. Drawing from Highland’s Young Professional Membership Index (YPMI) and experience working with intrapreneurs at leading Fortune 500 companies, we’ll examine behavioral shifts disrupting traditional membership models. We'll also introduce the Four Enabling Factors—Leadership Focus, Culture of Value, Strategic Alignment, and Experience Infrastructure—that support high-performing engagement strategies. You’ll also discover the role of anchor experiences, like a certification or first conference, and how well-designed bridge experiences can turn those moments into lasting connections. Learn how these time-bound programs that meet young professionals at key transitions and position your association as a career partner, not just a resource. If you’re ready to move beyond tactics, this session will show you where to start.

Use AI to Turn Your Evaluation Data into Education Gold
Your evaluation comments are telling you exactly what education to develop next - you just need AI to help you listen. This session transforms how education professionals use member feedback by demonstrating AI-powered analysis that reveals hidden patterns, unmet needs, and strategic opportunities buried in evaluation data. Work along as we use AI to analyze real evaluation feedback, identify discipline-specific gaps and compare findings against current medical continuing education and quality improvement standards. You'll discover education opportunities that traditional review methods miss completely. This isn't theoretical - it's a live workshop using actual evaluation data while you simultaneously analyze your own eval data using the same technology. Leave with concrete education opportunities you can start to develop, plus a reproducible process for turning future evaluation data into strategic intelligence. The session demonstrates how practical AI partnerships can amplify your professional insights, not replace them.

Why Are We Still Doing These (Five) Things in Education?
Associations thrive on predictability - we are, after all, human. Our time-tested educational offerings have long sustained us as trusted training providers in our respective industries. But as member expectations shift, is it time to stop doing some of the things we’ve always done? Why are we still defaulting to webinars? Why do we cling to the same flagship programs year after year? In this candid session, we invite you to question the habits and formats we’ve come to accept as unchangeable. Together, we’ll explore five entrenched practices in professional development and ask: Why are we still doing these things? And should we be?

From Data to Action: Designing Dashboards that Drive Association Decisions
Associations collect valuable data—on member engagement, event performance, revenue, and more—but too often that data stays locked in spreadsheets. Interactive dashboards can transform raw numbers into clear, visual insights that help staff, boards, and members make smarter decisions. When designed well, dashboards offer real-time views of progress and performance, surfacing trends and opportunities that might otherwise go unnoticed. But not all dashboards are created equal. Poorly designed dashboards can be cluttered, confusing, or just plain ignored. In this session, Amelia Kohm will unpack the key elements of effective dashboard design. You’ll learn how to create dashboards that are not only visually engaging but also intuitive, purposeful, and actionable. Whether you’re building a dashboard from scratch or refining one you already use, this session will give you practical guidance to make your data more accessible, meaningful, and impactful.

Leader vs. Manager: The Ultimate Showdown
Are you a leader? A manager? Probably both—if you're a successful executive in the association space. But can you switch between the two effectively? While the terms are often used interchangeably, leadership and management require distinct skill sets—and knowing when to lean into each is critical. In this fast-paced, interactive session, we’ll unpack the key differences between leading and managing, using real-world anecdotes and a gamified decision-making challenge. Participants will test their instincts, sharpen their awareness, and explore how to coach emerging professionals based on what role the situation demands. Whether rallying your sector or executing a strategy, you need to know which hat to wear—and when. Sometimes we need bold leadership. Sometimes we just need excellent management. Let’s stop confusing the two.

It’s a practical, story-driven conversation designed to equip you with the clarity, creativity, and confidence to thrive in the storm and prepare your organization for what comes next. Associations are no longer operating in an age of stability — we’re navigating uncharted waters where disruption is the norm. Governance challenges, shifting member expectations, volatile finances, evolving workplace dynamics, and the reinvention of events have become daily realities for association leaders. The pressure to deliver more with fewer resources has never been higher. This candid panel brings together senior voices from across the association community — CEOs, CFOs, event strategists, and innovators — to share unfiltered insights about leading through disruptive times. Attendees will leave this session with a clear understanding what’s really happening behind the scenes: the pivots, trade-offs, and bold decisions reshaping governance, membership, meetings, staffing, and engagement in today’s uncertain environment that they can apply to their organizations immediately.
