Sinus Augmentation Considerations for Dental Implant Therapy

Kevin R. Suzuki, DMD, MS

Dental Implants have become the most popular tooth replacement method currently in the dental field. When alveolar ridge dimensions are ideal, this procedure can be a simple and gratifying tooth replacement solution. However, when residual ridge dimensions and anatomical challenges complicate conditions for implant placement, additional considerations and techniques are indicated to achieve a predictable outcome. The maxillary sinus is a unique structure requiring profound respect and consideration when planning dental implants in the posterior maxilla. This presentation will address indications on when to implement sinus grafting and several contemporary techniques for augmentation prior to, or concurrently with, dental implant placement in the posterior maxilla.

Objectives:
  • The rationale for indications and concepts of maxillary sinus augmentation
  • Common pathological considerations for the maxillary sinus and considerations affecting graft and implant safety
  • Concepts of internal and lateral sinus augmentation techniques for implant placement and associated biologics
